In September 2010, Laser Cladding Singapore (LCS) Pte Ltd was formed through a joint venture between CLLS (Singapore) and its German partners Nippon Diesel Service GmbH and Gall & Seitz Systems.

The goal of this unique cooperation is to push forth restorative, cost-efficient, and environmentally-friendly technologies through a process known as “Laser-Powder-Cladding” in the Asian marine sector.

So what really is Laser-Powder-Cladding and how is it applied? In brief, it is the reconditioning of worn and damaged machinery components by fusing new material onto those components. This process basically extends the lifespan and durability of components at a fraction of the cost of buying a new component. So far the Company has successfully reconditioned engine components such as pistons, turbo-chargers as well as electrical generators, separators, gear parts and bow thrusters.

Based on scientific field tests of the Laser-Power-Cladding processes, results have been positive with the successful reconditioning of more than one thousand 4-stroke pistons and turbo-charger shafts which have now been put back in operation. The newly fused materials have also been proven to be more wear resistant and durable than the original component materials. In the case of turbo-charger shafts, their lifespan was extended by up to twice that of the normal lifespan of such parts, after the Laser-Powder-Cladding process had been applied

To ensure quality, LCS engineers and operators underwent a specialized training course in Germany to study and better understand Laser-Powder-Cladding processes before applying these techniques in Singapore.

LCS represents a host of opportunities for customers across many industries, not just the marine environement, specifically offering shorter down-times, lower replacement costs and of course the whole process is “greener” than many alternatives.
